SSEF GemTrack: Documenting the journey of a gemstone

Launched in 2019, the SSEF GemTrackTM service is asked by more of our clients every year. This tracking service not only documents the journey of a gemstone in time, but is also an attractive option for our clients to tell the story of the provenance of a specific and exceptional gemstone to their customers.

This service is available for any gemstone analysed twice at SSEF. It combines meticulous scientific analyses of a gemstone described on a SSEF report with a tracking document in an attractive layout. As such, the SSEF GemTrackTM is a versatile document that can be used as a solution for different needs as it may document the journey of a gemstone from:

  • a rough pebble/crystal to the cut gemstone
  • a loose stone to the gemstone set in jewellery
  • an old weight to a new weight after recutting and repolishing
  • an old stone, thus not being a new find from a source under boycott today

The above illustrated selection is highlighted by an exceptional purple spinel of 155 ct cut and polished from an outstanding rough crystal of  370 ct. Other SSEF GemTrackTM cases include sapphires from Burma and Kashmir cut from the rough and either tested again loose or set in a ring, and rubies from Burma and Mozambique as rough and cut stones.

Interestingly, we also issued GemTrackTM documents for clients who wanted to document the journey in time of faceted stones, such as for example a historic Kashmir sapphire with heavy wear marks which was recently recut, and the partition of a large but rather flat Colombian emerald into three smaller emeralds with a more modern cutting style.
