Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need previous gemmological knowledge?
Not necessarily. Many courses are designed for beginners and require no prior experience, including introductory programmes in gemmology, diamonds, and jewellery. More advanced and scientific courses may require existing gemmological knowledge or professional experience.
Which course should I take first?
The best starting point depends on your background and goals.
If you’re completely new to gemstones, Basic Gemmology, Basic Diamonds, or Basic Jewellery provide an excellent foundation. Experienced gem and jewellery professionals may prefer specialised courses focusing on advanced identification techniques, origin determination, treatments, or scientific aspects of gemmology.
Are courses taught in English?
English is the primary language for all in-person courses. Additional support is often available in several European languages during classroom sessions.
Online learning options are available in multiple languages, depending on the course. Tailored training programmes can also be developed and delivered in the language requested by the client.
Can companies arrange custom training?
Custom training programmes can be developed for jewellery brands, retailers, auction houses, gem dealers, educational institutions, and other organisations. Programmes can be delivered online, on-site, or at SSEF, and can be tailored to specific products, markets, and training objectives.
Contact the education team to discuss your requirements.
Will I receive a certificate?
Absolutely. Upon completing the course and passing a short multiple-choice assessment, you will automatically receive a digital SSEF Certificate.
Depending on the programme, certificates may be issued as Certificates of Participation, Attendance, or Completion.
How many students are in each class?
In-person courses are intentionally kept small, typically with a maximum of nine participants.
Small class sizes ensure that every student receives substantial individual attention from instructors and supporting gemmologists, particularly during practical training sessions involving gemstones and laboratory equipment.
