{"id":5472,"date":"2020-05-19T11:50:34","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T09:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssef.ch\/?p=5472"},"modified":"2022-11-28T09:57:35","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T08:57:35","slug":"breakthrough-scientific-study-on-precious-coral-identification-leads-to-new-dna-coral-fingerprinting-service-by-ssef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssef.ch\/de\/breakthrough-scientific-study-on-precious-coral-identification-leads-to-new-dna-coral-fingerprinting-service-by-ssef\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakthrough scientific study on precious coral identification leads to new DNA coral fingerprinting service by SSEF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BASEL, SWITZERLAND: MAY 19, 2020 &#8211; A\nbreakthrough study entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-64582-4\">DNA fingerprinting: an effective tool for\ntaxonomic identification of precious corals in jewelry<\/a>\u201d, authored by researchers from the\nSwiss Gemmological Institute SSEF and the University of Zurich\u2019s Institute of\nForensic Medicine (IRM) and recently published in the leading peer-reviewed\njournal <em>Scientific Reports (Nature Group)<\/em>, has led to a new service\nbeing offered by SSEF to aid in the traceability of precious coral jewellery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the first major scientific study that\ndetails a methodology using minute amounts of DNA recovered from precious coral\nused in jewellery to identify their species. This is vital given that a number\nof precious coral species are listed on the Convention on International Trade\nin Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix III, and thus need to be correctly\nidentified and declared in order to be legally traded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to trace precious corals back to\ntheir species-related and geographic origins can provide greater transparency, as\nwell as supply important scientific information for the documentation of modern\nand historic items. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DNA fingerprinting technology outlined in\nthe article represents a game-changing way of assessing the species identity of\nprecious corals found in the trade. Importantly, the technique described here\nis quasi non-destructive, requires considerably less sample material than other\nmethods, with testable DNA being recovered from as little as 2.3 milligrams\n(0.0115 carats) of material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8222;We are proud to be able to offer this new\nservice to the coral trade and contribute to greater traceability in the\njewellery industry,\u201d said Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki, director of SSEF. \u201cThis\nservice builds on our pioneering research into the genetic identification of\npearls, and the development of new methods to increase the traceability of\norganic gem materials in the trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Adelgunde Kratzer of the Institute of\nForensic Medicine at the University of Zurich stated: \u201cWe are thrilled that\nthis research collaboration has led to this joint publication and service. It\nis our hope that our DNA analysis of corals can contribute to conservation of\ncoral resources.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research and new service are being offered\nin partnership with the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of\nZurich, one of Switzerland\u2019s leading forensic institutes.
