SSEF Expedition to Vietnam

Luc Phan and Prof. Henry Hänni visited gemstone and pearl producing areas of Vietnam in June 2011. They visited ruby and spinel mines around the Luc Yen and Yen Bai areas and cultured pearl farms in the Halong Bay.

Publication on new bead materials in cultured pearls

We authored an article in the latest edition of the Journal of Gemmology on the appearance of new bead materials in cultured pearls. This article reports on the use of Chinese freshwater cultured pearls and natural pearls as beads in Pinctada Margaritifera and Pinctada Maxima oysters. Hänni, H.A., Krzemnicki, M.S. & Cartier, L.E. Talk on fancy coloured sapphires in Hong Kong

Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki gave a talk organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Gemmological Association of Hong Kong (GAHK) during the Spring fair in March 2011. Entitled 'Fancy coloured sapphires: the beauty beyond "blue" of sapphire and "red" of rubies', this fascinating presentation offers an insight into the diverse range of colours and origins of fancy sapphires.
