This is the first time that a gemmological laboratory gives a documentation about the laboratory's policy and working standards. Nowadays, with increasing demand regarding disclosure of treatments, the given information is especially relevant for the trade. Providing this valuable information the SSEF attempts a transparent policy, following the direction of the 21st century - a century of communication. The brochure is composed of seven main chapters: each covers one of the different gemstone species, provides large informations on the various gemstones and their treatments. Therefore the sample test reports and technical explanations for the various treatment situations have proven to be a welcome tool to assist in buying and selling certified quality gemstones. The policy of the SSEF with the disclosure of gem treatments is a result of discussions with representatives of the trade and a number of gemmological laboratories in February 1998 (Tucson, USA; Bogota, Columbia). The new standards have been discussed thoroughly and approved by the representatives of different levels of the gem industry in Switzerland.
