Advanced Training Course- Diamonds

(4 days, 2400.- Swiss Francs)

This advanced training course has a modular structure. It proposes theoretical presentations and practical workshops. The first part of the course introduces basic knowledge on diamonds (day 1) and than focuses on diamond grading (day 2). The second part of the course (days 3 & 4) is learning about the quality control of small diamonds. This course is highly interactive and is usually concluded by the delivery of the ATC-Diamonds Certificate.

Aims of this course:

The aim of the first part of this course is to learn about diamond and synthetic diamonds and how these can be separated, it also introduces to diamond grading. The second part of this special course is to develop a consistent quality management routine for small diamonds in the watch- and jewellery industry.

This course includes various workshops: on the authenticity tests and grading of large diamonds and on the quality control of small diamonds.

Course structure:

Day 1: Diamond, natural, synthetic and imitations (theory & workshop)

  • Formation and properties of natural diamonds
  • Diamond types
  • Growth conditions and properties of synthetic diamonds
  • Treatments modifying the colour of diamonds
  • Recent diamond treatments
  • The HPHT treatment of type II diamonds
  • HT treatment to produce black treated diamonds


Day 2: Diamond grading (theory & workshop)

  • Introduction to the 4C grades
  • Identification (measurements, etc.)
  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Cut
  • Symmetry
  • Proportions
  • Polish
  • Girdle
  • Culet
  • Fluorescence
  • External features
  • Internal features


Day 3 & 4: Quality control of small diamonds (theory & workshop)

Transposition of the large diamond grading procedures to the quality control of small diamonds.
